So it’s November, and if you’re a high school senior with your sights set on joining a college dance team, this is prime time. That phone call from a coach? It could be one of the most exciting and nerve-wracking moments of your journey. But here’s the good news: you don’t have to panic. You just have to prepare.
Why Coaches Call (and Why It Matters)
A call from a college dance coach is a big deal. It means you’re officially on their radar. They’ve seen your recruitment video, reviewed your résumé, or spotted you at a clinic — and they’re interested enough to take the next step.
The call gives them a chance to hear your voice, your attitude, and your professionalism. They’re gauging whether you’d be a good fit for their program, both on the team and on campus.
At College Dance Launch, we’ve seen it time and again: dancers who prepare for these calls stand out. They sound confident, mature, and genuinely excited. It’s that impression that sets them apart.
Common Questions Coaches Ask
It’s not a test — but it is an interview. Having thoughtful answers ready helps the conversation flow naturally. Expect questions like:
- “Tell me about yourself outside of your dance background and goals.”
- “What interests you about our program?”
- “How do you balance academics, training and time commitments?”
- “What are you planning to study?”
- “And the dreaded…Do you have any other dance programs of interest?”
How to Respond Like a Pro
1. Choose the right time and place.
If a coach calls while you’re in a loud environment, it’s okay to politely ask to call them back in a few minutes. You want to sound focused and composed.
2. Start with gratitude and enthusiasm.
Nerves are to be expected…and it’s totally ok to acknowledge that. But don’t make it weird with long silences or rapid-fire chattiness. A simple, “Hi Coach [Name]. Thank you so much for calling — I’m really excited to speak with you!”
3. Be concise and authentic.
Highlight your experience and goals in 2–3 sentences. Share something specific about why you love their program…maybe you’ve watched their nationals routine or admire their movement quality, leadership style or outreach.
4. Ask one or two thoughtful questions.
It shows genuine interest. For example:
- “What are your expectations for rookies as opposed to veterans?”
- “How do you support first-year dancers academically and athletically?”
- “Can you tell me what a day in the life looks like for your athletes?”
- “How does your program focus on athlete development?”
These are the conversations that separate serious recruits from everyone else.
5. Smile while you speak!
Even over the phone, your tone reflects confidence and warmth.
6. Don’t let honesty trip you up.
You needn’t volunteer details regarding other programs of interest you might have. However if asked, you should be open about your goals and desires. Coaches have clarity and understand the process….but won’t appreciate dishonesty. (Make NO mistake…the college dance team community is small and coaches talk.)
7. End with appreciation and action.
After the Call: Don’t Skip the Follow-Up!
The call might be over, but your impression continues. Within 24 hours:
Send a short thank-you email.
Mention something specific you discussed.
Reaffirm your excitement about the program.
Make sure you follow through on any of the materials the coach requested! If you don’t have it readily available in that 24-hr window, tell them when they can expect to find it in their inbox.
At College Dance Launch, we encourage our dancers to log each coach interaction: who called, what was discussed, and the next step. Staying organized helps you track your progress and maintain professionalism across programs.
📆 Your November Game Plan!
| Week | Focus | Action Steps |
| 1 | Prepare | Update your dance résumé, video, and “about me” notes. |
| 2 | Research | Learn key facts and trivia about your target programs and coaches. |
| 3 | Practice | Do a mock coach call with a mentor or parent. |
| 4 | Follow-up | Send thank-you emails, reflect on what you learned, and keep up your momentum. |
Remember: The Call Isn’t Just About Dance
November is all about GRATITUDE. An inquiry from a coach is a true gift…make sure you are treating it as such. But be aware coaches aren’t just recruiting dancers — they’re building teams. They’re looking for reliable, communicative, motivated students who will contribute to the culture they’ve built. Every interaction tells your story: your poise, preparedness, and character. So when the call comes, take a deep breath and share your gifts back with sincerity and humility..
