5 Things Parents need to know from the Pre-tryout Meeting

February 21, 2024

1. Team Expectations: Outline the commitment level, attendance requirements, and behavioral expectations of being part of the team. Talk about key differences from studio dancer to dance team member.  Let candidates and parents know that improvement comes with time and effort, collectively, and consistent full team practice is key to success in dance team, and that even 1 missing person can be detrimental to being able to move forward as a team.

2. Audition Requirements: Clearly communicate what dancers need to prepare and any specific skills required for the tryout including any combinations. Detail the dance combinations or routines that candidates will be expected to perform during the tryout. Also include skill levels, clarify the skill levels expected and any prerequisites for joining the dance team.

3. Tryout Details: This should explain the judging criteria and how candidates will be evaluated on technical skills, performance quality and overall presentation, as well as the dress code for the tryout, to ensure participants are appropriately dressed to showcase their abilities.

4. Financial obligations: Discuss all activity fees, costume costs, and other financial commitments associated with being on the team. Highlight what fees are considered “out of pocket expenses” versus which fees may be offset by the school or district, as well as fundraising opportunities.

5.  Explain your coaching philosophy on team culture. This is a great way to set the standards and overall precedence for decision-making and team operations.

  • Pro Tip! Leave time for questions: Open the floor for any questions about the audition process. And don’t forget final remarks; Conclude the meeting by expressing enthusiasm, providing contact information for further inquiries, and wishing everyone good luck.
